Biography
My career as an artist begun in a London based studio in 1981. It was here that I first developed a keen interest and an independent approach to glass sculpture; including stacking, laminating, and integrating steel amongst other media, together with refinement of more traditional processes using hydrofluoric acid (French Embossing) and sandblasting.
Since moving to Sydney in 1985, I further evolved these techniques to explore some of the unique opportunities presented in working with glass as medium. In particular, I became fascinated by the erosive force of sandblasting to sculpt thick panels of glass. When light is shone through deep-carved glass, the resulting interplay between light and translucent glass creates an impressive tonal spectrum, effectively allowing me to “carve with light”. A number of my more notable commissions during the 1990’s reflect this evolving technique.
While working with glass was my first passion in sculpture, I have since developed a keen interest in creating sculptural works using other commercially available mediums (including steel, stone, wood and fibreglass). While operating my own studio and as co-partner of a commercial art studio (Artizania) from the end of the 90’s up until 2005, I produced a number of large scale feature works for hotels, casinos, restaurants and corporate head offices (see Commissions).
In a departure from the world of commercial art, my latest passion is working with ceramics to further explore two key themes which have always inspired my work: light and the visual experience, and the mind and mental imagery. I am currently working on two bodies of work which reflect this journey:
